How Well Do You Know Your GMOs

If we saw a movie or television show where the government or a private organization was controlling the population by adding a foreign component to the food supply, we would think that the people who came up with the idea were conspiracy theorists.

For that very reason, most people will be surprised to learn this is exactly what has been happening in the last three decades with Genetically Modified Organisms.

Genetic manipulation is not far-fetched. It’s not only here, it’s been here for a long time. It is not science fiction- it is science fact, and we probably need look no further than your kitchen to find the examples of it.

THEY’RE DOING WHAT TO OUR FOOD?

The modification of DNA has been a reality since 1973 when recombinant DNA (rDNA) was created. In 1982 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first GMO, Humulin. Humulin is an insulin substitute produced by engineering E. coli bacteria.[i]

Genetically modified plants were created within ten years of the creation of rDNA. Five years later transgenic corn was engineered.

That’s right, only fifteen years from the creation of rDNA to transgenic food. It took a few more years to get to your dining room table, but it wasn’t long before GMOs were spread, via modified seeds, throughout the farmlands of the United States. Since then, fortunes have been made, farms have been lost, lives have been destroyed, and America’s health has gone into the toilet.

We’re not standing on the sidewalk anymore, we have been pushed under the GMO bus, and if we’re not careful it’s gonna flatten us.

This is a betrayal at the most basic level- where we eat. And now what we eat is controlled by corporations, rather than ourselves.

HOW DOES GMO AFFECT MY HEALTH?

Companies like Monsanto, Bayer (which recently purchased Monsanto for $66 billion), DuPont and Dow Chemical Co. create GMO seeds that contain pesticides that will keep insects from devouring the crops. Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a pesticide that works by breaking open the stomach of certain insects to kill them.

That corn sounds mighty… tasty.

Will that Bt have any effect on humans who consume it? Of course, it will. How could it not? There is a study showing that “leaky gut,” as well as an assortment of other health issues, can be directly attributed to eating Bt corn.[ii]  Leaky gut, or gut permeability, causes everything you eat to travel directly into your blood before it can be properly broken down, which can cause allergies and food intolerance, especially in children.

GLYPHOSATE IS NOT GLYPHO”SAFE”

Monsanto, who has been leading the pack in regards to GMOs, has been spending a lot of time and money trying to convince us that their herbicide, Roundup, is safe for human consumption, even going as far as drinking it at trade shows and lectures. It’s a great gimmick, but a thinking person can see through this easily. Not all poisons cause you to drop dead immediately.

The reason they say it is safe is because Roundup’s active ingredient is glyphosate, which kills weeds by functioning on the shikimate pathway, which isn’t present in animals. This way it kills weeds, but is still safe for you and me.

Half-truths are all false, and this is grade A fertilizer.

The kernel of truth is that the shikimate pathway isn’t present in animals. The full truth is that the shikimate pathway is present in human gut bacteria, the very bacteria that is key to your health. When that gut bacteria becomes compromised it will affect your health, and glyphosate has been linked to the increase of many chronic conditions, including:

  • Alzheimer’s disease
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Autism
  • Cancer
  • Infertility
  • Allergies
  • Inflammatory bowel disease, chronic diarrhea, colitis, Crohn’s disease
  • ALS
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Depression
  • Obesity

Take a good look at that list. How many of those ailments have been on the rise in society lately? Any of them? All of them? [iii] We see these conditions every day in our clinics, often from patients who have come to us when their primary doctor couldn’t help them.

Think about how many people you personally know who struggled with these sicknesses prior to the explosion of GMOs on the Food Stage in the mid-1980s. Certainly, they existed, but not on the scale they do now.

AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION…

There is an additional compelling component to the increased use of GMOs in our food: unlike so many other items dealing with food, genetically modified food does not need to be labeled in the United States. The European Union (EU) requires GMO labeling, as does China, but in the US, biotech companies have successfully fought every attempt to get their product labeled. [iv]

In the US, we are label crazy. Every food product in the local grocery store has some form of ingredient list. Fast food joints are labeling the calories of their food, sometimes right on the menu. They all have nutritional information, and let’s be honest- having that information handy does nothing to bolster an argument that their food is good for you. The sad thing is, people still buy the food, knowing it’s not good for them.

Then why do the biotech companies fight efforts to label?

They say it will be expensive and create fear among the consumers.

Expensive? These companies have billions in profits every year! The process they use to engineer GMO crops is more expensive than organic farming to begin with, so how can they complain about the price of labeling? That doesn’t make any sense.

Create fear among the consumers? It sure will, especially when people realize that they have been eating food that is bad for them. It doesn’t matter how big and red a tomato is, if it’s genetically modified it’s not good for you. This is exactly why a variety of polls show that more than 90 percent of Americans support labeling GMOs.[v]

This blatant disregard for what the people want just goes to show how corrupt these companies are, how financially invested they are with politicians, and how little they care for your health. You can put a green label on a bottle of cola and say it has “Real Sugar,” but that doesn’t mean it’s not loaded with toxins that will do your body damage. It’s a public relations exercise or a marketing scheme, nothing more.

THERE ARE OPTIONS

Labeling GMOs would make it so much easier for consumers. Unfortunately, we can’t count on it happening soon. What can you do until reason sees the light of day and those labels appear?

  • Don’t feed the monster. Grow your own food as much as possible. Even a small garden can feed your family for a time.
  • Buy from farmers you know who don’t use GM seeds. They’re out there, you just need to find them.
  • Shop farmer’s markets. That takes the whole “you have to find them” element out of the equation. You’ll be amazed at the variety and the price.
  • Engage your local grocery store. Let them know it’s worth their while to supply non-GMO food. Get your friends to talk to them too. If enough people make noise we could see a revolution take place.
  • Contact your representatives and let them know that you want to see the common sense labeling of GMOs. Revolutions can start in a politician’s office too. You may not have as much money as Monsanto, Bayer or DuPont, but you and your friends still vote and in the end, politicians are supposed to work for the people.

IS IT TOO LATE? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Americans have been consuming GMOs without even knowing it.[vi] Studies found glyphosate in our food and in our bodies, doing damage and sending our society down a dark path of suffering and disease. We’ve demonstrated that the FDA and EPA aren’t concerned, so it will be our own responsibility to stay healthy until enough people get upset and say, “Enough!”

The most important thing you can do is get tested. Find out what GMOs have been doing to your body. The World Health Organization labeled glyphosate as a “probable carcinogen” for a reason- it damages your body. Find out what this poison has been doing to you and, more importantly, what you need to do to get on your path to wellness.

THE FUTURE IS ALREADY HERE

The idea that genetic manipulation is a fantasy in cheesy movies or overwrought books is not the case. It’s here, it’s part of our everyday life- and it’s bad for you. Almost every chronic disease has increased since the introduction of GMOs, and in almost epidemic proportions. The good news is that nobody can touch the clinical results The Wellness Way has achieved by naturally bolstering health.

We have options to avoid the genetic storm we’re in. We have choices- at least for the time being. Eat clean food and exercise your Constitutional rights as an American.  Empower yourself with truth and knowledge regarding GMOs. They’re the greatest weapons you can have.
